Back in 1999, I was first introduced to Linux by a friend who said it is the future but he could not install it in his PC. At that time, all the computer experts around me failed to install Linux on any PC. They were using RedHat (forgot the version, probably 5 or 6). I collected installer from one of them and tried it myself to install. I did not have my own PC. All my experiments went into some of my friends PC and all the PCs crashed. I almost gave up learning Linux. I knew it was not Linux's fault. It was my fault as I was thinking MS way to use it. And unlucky enough the installer CD was faulty (I did not know about that). I had no idea what is md5sum check. So could not check the CD. After couple of months later, I found Mandrake (probably 7) and installed it very easily. Since then I fell in love with Linux. Later, I installed RedHat 7 in our computer lab in some of the machines. It looked so beautiful (Gnome desktop) compared with Window$ 98 and 2000 that people afraid of Linux also liked to watched me using Linux over my shoulder. And while I used enlightenment (e16), I could hear the WOW from every corner in the room.
I have personally used Mandrake until Ubuntu came into the play. I am a desktop user. So ease of use is my first concern. As soon as I learned that Ubuntu is THE user-friendly amongst all the distributions, I switched to it instantly. I don't want to start a flame-war. But I hate rpm systems. I just love the speed and user-friendliness of apt. So I was looking for a Debian derivative which can give me latest and bleeding edge software. Ubuntu did it for me. For the time being, I am a Ubuntu die-hard fan. I now restart my machine almost every 6 months as Ubuntu upgrades itself to the next version.
I am pretty happy with Ubuntu so far. It's not only the ease of use, it's also the community which is very much helpful and vibrating. I just feel lucky to be one of the community.
